Guide · Auto-Enrolment
Ireland's auto-enrolment pension — what My Future Fund means for you.
For the first time, most Irish PAYE workers without a workplace pension will be enrolled by default into a State-administered retirement scheme — with an employer match and a Government top-up. Here's how it works, who's in scope, and where it might (and might not) be the right answer.
Who's enrolled
Every PAYE employee aged 23–60 earning over €20,000 a year who is not already an active member of a qualifying occupational pension or PRSA. Self-employed workers are not auto-enrolled — they still need a personal PRSA or RAC.
How the contributions stack up
Phased over ten years. Indicative table (% of gross salary):
| Years | Employee | Employer | State top-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | 1.5% | 1.5% | 0.5% |
| 4–6 | 3% | 3% | 1% |
| 7–9 | 4.5% | 4.5% | 1.5% |
| 10+ | 6% | 6% | 2% |
Auto-enrolment vs PRSA
My Future Fund swaps marginal-rate tax relief for a flat 25% State top-up on the employee share. At the 40% income-tax rate, a PRSA or master-trust scheme typically delivers a higher net contribution per €1 of take-home pay — but only if you actually arrange one. The right move depends on your marginal rate and whether your employer matches a private scheme.
