Pension consolidation and overseas transfer tracking.

For people moving home to the West of Ireland with pensions scattered across UK, EU and Irish schemes — what to consolidate, what to leave, and what Revenue actually allows.

Trace before you transfer

Start by listing every employment that contributed to a pension. Reach out to each scheme administrator for a member benefit statement. UK pots can also be located via the government's Pension Tracing Service. Don't assume small old DC pots are negligible — they grow.

Standard PRSA fee caps

A Standard PRSA is capped at 5% contribution charge and a 1% Annual Management Charge per Revenue rules. That's a practical benchmark for any consolidated vehicle. If you're being offered something higher, there should be a clear reason — usually an investment proposition you can't get elsewhere.

Irish Revenue rules to watch

Standard Fund Threshold currently applies to total pension benefits at retirement. Foreign transfers in are tested against Irish funding limits. Take advice before any irrevocable step — a wrong transfer can lock in tax or charges you can't reverse.

Frequently asked

Sometimes — but post-2017 changes mean transfers from UK registered schemes are restricted. Many UK pots are now held in QROPS or kept in the UK. Always take advice before initiating a transfer; tax consequences can be significant.
