Guide · Provider comparison

Compare the five main Irish income protection providers.

Royal London, Aviva, Irish Life, New Ireland and Zurich all sell income protection in Ireland — but underwriting appetite, occupation class limits and pricing diverge sharply. Here's how to read the differences before you ask an advisor to rebroke.

ProviderClassesStrengthsWatch-outs
Royal London Ireland1, 2, 3, 4Broad occupation appetite, strong own-occupation definitions, competitive Class 1–3 pricing, accepts most mental-health histories on disclosure.Premium reviewable at year 5 on some legacy structures — confirm guaranteed vs reviewable at quote stage.
Aviva Life & Pensions Ireland1, 2, 3Aggressive Class 1 pricing for under-40s, fast online underwriting, generous early-claim definitions.Tighter on declared anxiety/depression than peers; medical evidence sometimes deferred 12–24 months.
Irish Life1, 2, 3, 4Largest Irish IP book — strong claims-paying record, accepts most Class 4 trades, robust waiver-of-premium options.Online underwriting less granular — borderline cases often referred to a tele-interview.
New Ireland Assurance1, 2, 3, 4Indexation defaults to 3% on benefit and premium, strong added-value services (Best Doctors, EAP).Class 4 pricing not always competitive; loadings common for hazardous hobbies.
Zurich Life Ireland1, 2, 3Predictable underwriting for Class 1–2 professionals, clean digital quote journey, competitive deferred-26 pricing.Limited appetite for Class 4; income definitions less flexible for company directors taking dividends.

Why headline price isn't the answer

Two insurers can quote within €5/month of each other and have completely different definitions of "unable to work." Own-occupation vs suited-occupation cover, indexation defaults, and guaranteed-vs-reviewable premiums all matter more than the headline.

Occupation class drives the shortlist

Class 1 (desk-based) buyers can rebroke across all five insurers. Class 4 (heavy manual) typically narrows the field to Royal London, Irish Life and New Ireland — Aviva and Zurich often decline. Get the class confirmed before chasing the cheapest premium.
